But I don't recall having to install MGO with MGS4, but then again we are taking well over a year ago and my mind is not what it used to be thanks to pain management. I just remember cracking up during the install scenes while Snake is smoking a cigarette on a game targeted to kids thinking Joe Camel found a way around that law...LOL!

There's like a 10mins install when you first pop the game into your PS3 on MGS4, than a subsequent 5mins or less install on every now chapter.

MGS4 = Sole reason to own a PS3, the rest are extras

And yes, if you don't care about MGO or simply want to get to the good stuff, you can skip it alltogether and just play the real game.

MGO is optional from the main menu of the game

Maybe I am thinking of a different game then. Now that you mentioned it, I remember that screen with Snake smoking and that was not the one that took forever. I went through like 3 new games over the weekend and just got them confused. Maybe it was SOCOM that was the one that took so long then.

As for what I didn't like about MGS 4, I don't know what it was. I just know that something about it rubbed me the wrong way. I was a huge fan of the originals. But this one just seemed....off to me. It's a bunch of cut scenes with the occasional sneaking missing thrown in. Maybe I just need to give it another go with a more impartial mindset. Also, I didn't like SOCOM once I found out it was online only with no single player and without, at least that I could find, any kind of training missions to get you prepared for playing online. I got that one installed, fumbled around the menu trying to find some training scenarios and then promptly took it out. I plan to trade it in when I go to pick up FF XIII next month.

Yup, take MGS4 more like a movie with sections where you get in on playing around the action

MGO's longest part is the blasted updates...those took forever to download.

My network runs about 1MB/sec, so my downloads are pretty quick; I often set stuff to run in the background and move on to other things...this solves the "staring at the download screen" problem.

My Comcast is ~2 MBps (~16 Mbps) and it still goes slow as hell. Installing Heavy Rain last night there was already an update for it (which you can't set to run in the background). It was a 252 MB download and took 27 minutes to download and install. It started out saying 10 minutes, then fluctuated up and down between 8 and 10 minutes until about the 40% mark. Then stayed at 10 minutes and made no progress for 10 minutes, then continued downloading and finally finished after a total of 27 minutes. Almost all of my game updates have gone like that so far.

Could it be that I am connecting wirelessly? Are there any known issues with PS3 wireless networking, or maybe specifically problems with wireless connections when using an Apple Airport Extreme? I have no other problems with any other devices that connect to the internet in my house. Just the PS3. I also keep getting "Unknown Error" messages that kick me off PSN forcing me to sign back on. I get those probably 6 or so times a week while playing games. My Airport is literally just 2 feet away from the PS3. So I know it can't be an issue with signal not being strong enough.

Never had that issue with updates, they take their sweet time, but if it says 8-10mins, it usually finishes under that time.

Sorry, should have qualified that...my downloads on my PS3 are about 1MB/sec...my connection is 16megabit according to Comcast, but I'm usually hitting over 20.

Wireless might have something to do with it...but then, I'm not sure. My PS3 is hardwired to a switch, which is in turn connected to my 802.11N Airport Express which is talking wirelessly to my router (Airport Extreme).

A couple things you could try would be to try changing the channel on the router to something else; that might help if other devices in your house are causing interference.

Option 2 would be to order a nice short CAT6 cable from Monoprice.com

Will try the channel thing...if I can figure out how on the Extreme. But I doubt that will change anything. As I said, I have other devices connected wirelessly (and from farther distances and through walls, I might add) that never have any problem with connections or downloads.

Option 2 is not an option since there are no available ports open on the back of the Airport to plug another cable into. Since I won't ever be using my 360 and PS3 online at the same time, I may try just swapping the cable between the two of them and see if that clears anything up.

You could always get a 5-port switch like I've got...spread the joy.
